Islam has laid stress on proper dressing. Sayyiduna Ibn-e-Abbas (radi Allahu anhuma) reported that the Messenger of Allah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: “Eat whatever you wish and wear whatever you desire unless there is extravagance or false pride.”  (Bukhari) 

Sayyiduna Anas (radi Allahu anhu) reported that the Messenger of Allah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) liked to wrap himself in Hibrah which was a stripped shawl manufactured in Yemen. (Bukhari, Muslim) 

Sayyiduna Jaabir Bin Samrah (radi Allahu anhu) reported: “I saw the Messenger of Allah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) wrapping in red-striped shawl in a moonlit night. I looked the face of the Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) and then at the moon and I found the Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) prettier than the moon”.  (Tirmidi) 

Sayyiduna Abu Burdah (radi Allahu anhu) reported: “I visited Sayyidah Ayesha (radi Allahu anha) who took out for us a small blanket full of patches and a coarse lower garment and swore in the Name of Allah  that Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) was wearing these clothes when he breathed his last”. (Bukhari, Muslim) 

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra (radi Allahu anhu) reported that the Messenger of Allah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: “Allah will not grant him His sight of Mercy who wears a wrapper so low that it touches the ground.” (Bukhari) Same reported that Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: “The portion of the wrapper, which is lower than the ankle, is in Fire.” (Bukhari)

Sayyiduna Abdullah Ibn-e-Omar (radi Allahu anhuma) reported that Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu) saw Utarid al-Tamimi standing in the market (and selling) the silk garments, and he was the person who went to (courts of) Kings and got (high prices) for these garments from them. Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu) said: “Allah’s Messenger (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam), I saw Utarid standing in the market with a silk garment; would that you buy and wear it for (receiving) the delegations of Arabs when they visit you?” 

I (the narrator) said: “I think Omar (radi Allahu anhu) also said: ‘You may wear it on Friday (also)’. Thereupon, Allah’s Messenger (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: ‘He who wears silk in this world has no share in the Hereafter’. Later on when these silk garments were presented to Allah’s Messenger (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam). He presented one silk garment to Omar (radi Allahu anhu) and presented one also to Usamah Bin Zaid (radi Allahu anhu) and gave one to Ali Ibn-e-Abu Talib (radi Allahu anhu), saying: ‘Tear them and make head coverings for your ladies’. Omar (radi Allahu anhu) came carrying his garment and said: ‘Allah’s Messenger (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam), you have sent it to me, whereas you had said yesterday about the silk garment of Utarid what you had to say.’ The Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: ‘I have not sent it to you that you wear it, but I have sent to you so that you may derive benefit out of it,’ and Usamah (radi Allahu anhu) (donned) the garment (presented to him) and appeared to be brisk, whereupon Allah’s Apostle (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) looked at him with a look by which he perceived that the Messenger of Allah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) did not like what he had done. He said: ‘Allah’s Messenger (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam), why is it that you look at me like this whereas you yourself presented it to me?’ He said: ‘I never sent it to you to wear it, but I sent it to you so that you may tear it and make out head coverings for your ladies’”. (Muslim) 

Sayyiduna Anas bin Maalik (radi Allahu anhu) reported that the Messenger of Allah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) had granted concession to Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (radi Allahu anhu) and Sayyiduna Zubair bin Awam (radi Allahu anhu) for the wearing of a silk shirt during the journey and because of itch which they both had or any other disease from which both of them had been suffering.  (Muslim) 

Sayyiduna Samorah (radi Allahu anhu) reported that Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: “Wear white clothes, as these are more clean and pure and wrap up your dead in them.” (Nisaai)  

Sayyiduna Abdullah Bin Amr (radi Allahu anhu) reported that a companion of the Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) passed by and greeted him but he did not respond to his greeting as he was wearing red-coloured clothes. (Tirmidi) 

Sayyidah Ayesha (radi Allahu anha) reported that Sayyidah Asma (radi Allahu anha) came to Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) wearing very fine clothes. The Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) turned his face and said: “O Asma! When a woman attains the puberty, no part of her body should be exposed to others except face and palms.” (Abu Da’ood) 

Sayyiduna Ubadah Bin Samit (radi Allahu anhu) reported that the Messenger of Allah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: “Wear a turban, as this is the symbol of Angels and hang it behind your back.” (Bay’haqi) 

Sayyiduna Rukanah (radi Allahu anhu) reported that the Beloved of Allah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: “The very mark of distinction between the apostates and us is that our turbans are tied over the caps.” (Tirmidi) 

Sayyiduna Ibn-e-Omar (radi Allahu anhu) reported that Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: “Whoso wears the cloth of fame in this world, will be made to wear the cloth of defame on the Day of Resurrection”. (Abu Da’ood) (“The cloth of fame” here stands to mean rich clothes to display one’s superiority.)  

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra (radi Allahu anhu) reported that the Messenger of Allah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) used to start from his right hand while wearing a shirt. (Tirmidi) 

Sayyiduna Abu Sa’eed Khudri (radi Allahu anhu) reported that the Messenger of Allah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) used to recite the following Du’a whenever wearing a new garment. First, he used to mention the name of the garment such as turban, shirt, shawl, etc. and then recite: “O Allah, all praises are due to You alone. You have given me this garment to wear. I ask You the goodness of this garment and the goodness of that for which it is made and I seek Your Protection from the evil of this garment and the evil of that for which it can be used”. (Tirmidi) 

Sayyiduna Ma’az Bin Anas (radi Allahu anhu) reported that Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: “Allah will forgive all his sins whoever recites the following Dua while wearing a cloth, ‘All praise is due to Allah Who gave me this to wear and gave it to me without any strength and ability on my part.’” (Abu Da’ood) 

Sayyiduna Abdullah Ibn-e-Omar (radi Allahu anhuma) reported that Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: “Any person who copies the ways of a nation, is of the same nation” (Abu Da’ood) 

Sayyiduna Abdullah Ibn-e-Abbas (radi Allahu anhuma) reported that Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) cursed those women who liken men and cursed those men who liken women. (Abu Da’ood) 

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra (radi Allahu anhu) reported that the Beloved Habeeb (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) cursed the man who wears the ladies dress and cursed the woman who wears the gent’s dress. (Abu Da’ood) We can use the silk in bed-sheets and pillows. Tassar is also a kind of coarse silk and is as unlawful as the fine silk, Kashi silk and China silk. The cloth made of jute which appears to be like silk can be used but the theologians say that religious leaders should keep away from wearing these as people would think that they are wearing silk. We can use buttons of gold and silver but these buttons should not have the chain of the same metal.
