MANNERS OF SITTING, SLEEPING AND WALKING

The Holy Quraan says: “Turn not your cheek in scorn toward folk, not walk with insolence in the land. Lo! Allah loves not each braggart boaster.” (31:18)

Almighty Allah says: “And walk not in the earth exultant. Lo! You cannot rend the earth, nor can you stretch the height of the hills.” (17:37)

The Holy Quraan commands: “The faithful slaves of the Beneficent are they who walk upon the earth modestly, and when the foolish ones address them answer: Peace!” (25:63)

Almighty Allah says: “O you who believe! When it is said, Make room in assemblies, then make room; Allah will make way for you (Hereafter). And when it is said, Come up higher, go up higher; Allah will exalt those who believe among you, and those who have knowledge, to high ranks. Allah is informed of what you do.” (58:11)

Sayyiduna Abdullah Ibn-e-Omar (radi Allahu anhuma) reported that the Messenger of Allah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: “No person should ask another person to stand at his place and then he should himself sit there, but he should simply say: Make room and accommodate.” (Bukhari, Muslim)

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra (radi Allahu anhu) reported that Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: “He who leaves his place and goes to attend some urgent work and comes back soon, deserves the place which he had left”. (Muslim)

Sayyiduna Abu Darda (radi Allahu anhu) reported that the Glorious Prophet of Allah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) used to leave his shoes or some other belonging at his place before leaving his place so that the Sahabah could know that he will come back soon. (Abu Da’ood)

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Omar (radi Allahu anhuma) reported that the Messenger of Allah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: “It is not lawful for anyone to cause a separation between two persons. It means that one should not sit forcibly between two persons but with their permission”. (Abu Da’ood, Tirmidi)

Sayyiduna Wathilah Bin Khattab (radi Allahu anhu) reported that a man called on the Messenger of Allah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) who was seated in his mosque. The Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) moved aside to make a place for the visitor. The visitor said: “There is enough place for me to sit, O Allah’s Apostle (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam)!” The Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: “It is the right of a Muslim that when he sees his Muslim brother, he should make a place for him”. (Bay’haqi)

Sayyiduna Abu Sa’eed Khudri (radi Allahu anhu) reported that the posture of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) while sitting in his Mosque was that he sat upon his buttocks with both of his knees erect against his chest. He used to encircle his knees with his hands. This posture shows humility.

Allah’s Messenger (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) prohibited sitting half in the sun and half in the shade.

Sayyiduna Anas (radi Allahu anhu) reported that the beloved Habeeb (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: “Put off your shoes while sitting at a place as this will give comfort to your feet.”

Sayyiduna Jaabir (radi Allahu anhu) reported that the Rasool of Allah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: “None of you should lie on his back and place one of feet upon the other”. (Muslim) Perhaps this prohibition was to avoid the exposure of private parts in this state of lying down.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra (radi Allahu anhu) reported that the beloved Habeeb (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) saw a man lying on his belly and said: “Allah does no like this posture.” (Tirmidi)

Sayyiduna Abu Dhar (radi Allahu anhu) reported: “I lay upon my belly when Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) passed by me. He kicked me and said, ‘This is the posture of the inmates of Hell’”. (Ibn-e-Majah)

Sayyiduna Jaabir (radi Allahu anhu) reported that the beloved Rasool (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) asked us not to sleep on a terrace, which has no walls or boundaries. (Tirmidi)

Sayyiduna Abu Yah’li (radi Allahu anhu) narrated on the authority of Sayyidah Ayesha (radi Allahu anha) that Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: “He who sleeps after the Asr prayer, should curse himself for any damage of his sanity.”

Sayyiduna Ibn-e-Omar (radi Allahu anhu) reports that Allah’s Messenger (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) has forbidden a man walking between two women. Sayyiduna Ibn-e-Omar (radi Allahu anhu) reports: “Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said, ‘If anyone comes across women while walking on the road, don’t pass in their middle but keep aside either your right or your left’”.

Qailoolah (siesta or nap at noon) is lawful particularly for those who remain awake at night for performing additional prayers or Dhikr or reading the religious books.

According to the Hadith children should not be allowed to go outdoors in the evening as the Shaytaan are most active in at that time. However, they may be allowed to go out after some portion of the night passes.

On retiring to bed, Bismillah should be recited when closing the door, when putting out the lamp, when putting out the lights and when covering utensils containing water or food. Utensils containing food must not be left uncovered. If nothing is available with which to cover them, at least a twig should be placed across the mouth of such utensils (as a precautionary measure against the evil effects of Shaytaan). As mentioned above, Bismillah must be recited when doing this.

It is advisable to make ablution before retiring to bed. Before getting into bed, the bed should be cleaned thrice with the corner of a turban or any cloth. Then the following Dua should be recited before lying down: “With Thy Name, O My Lord! Have I laid my body to rest. And with Your help shall I arouse it. If You capture my body, do grant it forgiveness. And if You set it free, protect it as You protect Your pious servants.”

Lie on the right side of your body and folding the right hand, use it as a pillow placing it under the cheek and recite this Dua: “With Allah’s Name have I laid my body to rest. O Allah, forgive my sins and drive away my Shaytaan from me and free my neck of all responsibilities and let my scale of actions become heavy and include me amongst the exalted people”. Thereafter, recite this Dua thrice: “O Allah! Save me from Your punishment on the Day when You shall raise Your servants (in the grave)”. Thereafter, recite this Dua: “With Your Name, My Lord! Have I laid down. So forgive my sins.” Then recite: “O Allah! With Your Name I die and live”. Thereafter, say 33 times Subhan-Allah, 33 ties Alhamdulillah and 34 times Allah-o-Akbar.

Before retiring to bed open both hands as in Dua and recite the last three Surahs of the Holy Quraan and blow on them, then pass them all over the body as far as they can reach. Start from the head to the face to the front portion of the body. This must be done thrice.

When lying down on the bed, recite Ayat-ul-Kursi. Whoever does this while lying down on the bed, Allah will grant protection to his as well as his neighbours’ homes in the same vicinity. Moreover, the Shaytaan will not dare to approach him till the morning.

Thereafter, recite the following Istighfaar thrice: “I beg to Allah – the One besides whom there is no deity, The Everlasting and All-Sustainer – His forgiveness and I offer repentance before him”. Thereafter, recite Surah Kafiroon and sleep. According to the Hadith, anyone doing this, Almighty Allah appoints an Angel to guard him while he sleeps.

Dhikr should also be made before sleeping. According to the Hadith, when a person lies down to sleep, an Angel and a Shaytaan advances towards him. The Angels says: “O Son of Adam! End your day upon goodness.” The Shaytaan says to him: “End your day upon evil”. If he makes Dhikr, the Angel guards him for the duration of the night, otherwise the devil takes charge of him.

It is mentioned in the Hadith that when a person has a pleasant dream, then on awakening he should say Alhamdulillah and mention the dream only to such people who love him so that a good interpretation could be given. On the contrary, if an unpleasant dream is seen, then on awakening, one should spit or blow thrice towards the left and recite thrice: “I take refuge of Allah against the Cursed Shaytaan”. Such a dream will not cause any harm if it is not mentioned to anyone. Turning should change the sleeping posture to the other side. Even better, one should get out of bed and perform Tahajjud Salaah.

When awakening from sleep, recite: “All praises are due to Allah Who returned me my Nafs and did not cause it to die in its sleep. All praises are due to Allah Who sustains the heavens and the earth – lest they cease. And if they fail there is none that can sustain them thereafter. Surely, He is Most Forgiving, Oft-Forgiving. All praises are due to Allah Who withholds the sky from falling on the earth except by His leave. Surely, Allah is Most Kind and Most Merciful to man.”

Thereafter, recite the following Dua: “All praises are due to Allah Who gives life to the dead He has power over all things.”
